Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the health perceptions, problems and health behaviors of the elderly, then to contribute in providing the basic knowledge for development of nursing intervention for health promotion of elderly.
During the periods from April 10 to 21 in 1997, the interview was performed through open and structured questionnaire in 134 subjects and data were categorized and analyzed by the SAS programs.
The results were as follows :
1. It was revealed that most highly complained health problems were in general chronic diseases
2. Physical exercise, strolling, climbing mountains and social activities were usually performed to keep healthy.
3. It showed that health behavior were positively correlated with those recognizing a good health status(p=0.026), concerning about the health (p=0.049) and reconciling self esteem(p=0.023).
The following statement is recommened on the basis of the above findings :
1. It is necessary to investigate the health behavior and health perception of elderly more precisely through personal interview with those who are staying at home and institutions.
2. It is highly recommended to develope of nursing intervention to enhance self-esteem, which is one of the factors to influence the health behavior.
